SET YOUR WATCH TO MEMPHIS TIME

Memphis is a colorful city; historically, characteristically and visually. I love the vibrant murals scattered throughout the downtown area. This one, painted in 2015 on the exterior of the abandoned Sterick Building at Madison Ave. and B.B. King Blvd., is one of my favorites. It's one of a group of murals; a collaboration between Kyle Taylor, Brandon Donahue, and Brandon Marshall, along with AXA Equitable and Downtown Memphis Commission, that were "inspired by the work, the big ideas, the soulful struggles, and the elbow grease that has made, and is making, Memphis what it is." It is also across the street from The Hotel Napoleon; one of my favorite hotels in downtown Memphis!

Read about the murals here on the Downtown Mural Guide provided by The Downtown Memphis Commission.

The Sterick Building was bustling with activity when I worked downtown in the 70's. In fact, my dentist's and ENT doctor's offices were there. As I recall, the regal, Gothic-revival style building was painted all white then. It was built in 1928, and is 29 stories high. It was added to the National Register of Historic places in 1978, however it's been vacant since 1987.
